SCR’s energy practice encompasses all energy areas:  energy and environment, oil, natural gas, electricity, thermal coal and uranium.  In each area national and international developments are surveyed and analysed.  For example, carbon pricing policies, crude and product oil prices and demands, electricity and gas developments and price trends and nuclear trends (plants, economics).  Papers on trends in these areas are presented twice a year at energy conferences of the National Institute for Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR).

SCR specialises in rigorous program evaluation, program design, energy modelling and analysis, energy efficiency and renewable energy developments, as well as providing advice and analysis in the energy fields outlined above.

Clients include State agencies:  Victorian Departments of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Primary Industries (DPI), Sustainability Victoria and the Federal Department of Energy, Industry and Tourism and electrical and gas utilities (Envestra, CitiPower) and private companies such as Transfield and Origin Energy.  Associate companies include Environ (environmental engineering) and National Economics (macro and micro economic modelling).

Key projects have been a critique of the Residential Mandatory Disclosure policy and Estimation of Impacts of Victorian and National Climate Change Programs over 2008-2015, both for DSE, with NIEIR the impact of climate change policies on gas and electricity demands on gas and electricity for energy distributors and for several clients the impact of climate change and other energy demand policies on retail gas and electricity over 2010-2020.  Also a report on Canadian and European energy end-use policies, based on a SCR trip to Canada and Europe was prepared and presented to clients.
